Bios:
Carmina Hughes
Carmina Hughes is an executive director with Daylight in its Washington office. She is an attorney with over 27 years of investigation and litigation experience in the financial services industry and law enforcement.
Before joining Daylight Forensic, Carmina was a principal with the forensic practice at a "Big Four" accounting firm where she specialized in anti-money laundering compliance and investigations. Carmina’s focus has been on the financial services sector where she works with compliance, audit and legal groups to perform anti-money laundering assessments, training, risk assessments and investigations. She also performed corporate governance reviews and pre-acquisition due diligence compliance assessments.
Prior to joining the private sector, she served as special counsel for enforcement and special investigations at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. In this role, Carmina was responsible for conducting money laundering and fraud investigations, bringing all types of enforcement actions against banks and individuals, shaping domestic and international anti-money laundering policies, and implementing the USA PATRIOT Act and Bank Secrecy Act.
Carmina spent 16 years as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Maryland, where she was responsible for the investigation and prosecution of all types of federal crimes including white collar fraud, tax fraud, securities fraud, money laundering and violent crimes. She has held various supervisory posts such as Chief of General Crimes, Chief of Priority Crimes and Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division. Prior to that, Carmina was an Assistant Attorney General for the state of Maryland, handling criminal appeals and representing state officials in correctional litigation matters.
Carmina has a bachelor's degree from Bethany College and earned her law degree from the University of Maryland.
Pam Verrick
Pamela Verick is a Director in the Protiviti Litigation, Restructuring and Investigative Services solution area where she focuses on investigations and leads our fraud risk management initiative. Pam has 18 years of risk management experience, including development of anti-fraud programs and controls, fraud risk assessment, fraud, misconduct and FCPA investigations, Sarbanes-Oxley assistance and development of compliance and ethics programs for both the public and private sector. Prior to joining Protiviti, Ms. Verick was a Director in the Forensic practice of a Big 4 professional services firm, where she served as a global product champion for fraud and misconduct diagnostic services. Her practice focused on fraud risk management and forensic investigations and she has provided assistance to internal and external audit teams on a myriad of issues, including financial investigations and implementation of SAS 99. Ms. Verick previously worked as a Government and Industry Affairs Specialist for the insurance brokerage of Alexander & Alexander, advising on legislative, regulatory and compliance issues affecting Fortune 1000 companies.
Ms. Verick’s technical expertise in risk management, specifically in matters involving fraud and misconduct, was developed through her work with Fortune 500 and 1000 companies and non-profit organizations as well as federal, state and local government agencies.
Bill Olsen
Bill Olsen is a principal in Grant Thornton LLP’s Mid-Atlantic Advisory Services practice. Bill is a former member of the Special Prosecutions section of the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, and also served as the Global Security Manager for a Fortune 500 company. Prior to joining Grant Thornton, Bill worked for Arthur Andersen. Many of his engagements have included matters involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, Bank Secrecy Act, False Claims Act, and RICO.
Bill has performed numerous investigations involving management fraud, organized crime and corruption. Many of these investigations involved the preparation of complex financial information and forensic analysis for legal counsel. He has also performed due diligence investigations and net worth analysis for entities and individuals seeking approval and/or licensing from government agencies as well as entities involved in mergers and acquisitions.
Bill has provided forensic technology services to many clients, and has assisted in developing exception audit programs and in designing computer-tracking systems to identify patterns of possible fraud or money laundering. He also has assisted law firms and government agencies in performing asset searches for purposes of forfeiture and recovery. Bill has consulted numerous organizations in developing, policies, controls and procedures to assure compliance with government regulations. He specializes in the area of anti-corruption and anti-money laundering services.
Bill was one of the key Grant Thornton team members working with the World Bank Institute (WBI) as they introduced a new tool, Fighting Corruption Through Collective Action – a Guide for Business.
Kelly Gentenaar
Kelly Gentenaar is a Manager, Economic Advisory Service with Grant Thornton
Industry Experience:
Anti-Corruption Investigations and Compliance Reviews: Conducted and managed numerous Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) investigations and compliance reviews. Engagements involved the review of corporate records and governance policies to provide recommendations for enhancements of procedures within the context of an FCPA program. Provided overall anti-corruption internal controls review of large multi-national not-for-profit. Managed an international team providing investigation of allegations of the bribery of foreign officials by key members of a Fortune 500 company. Participated in a major due diligence investigation of an international gaming company.
Forensic Accounting: Conducted and managed numerous forensic accounting investigations. Engagements range include such activities as conducting net worth analysis of individuals to help identify potential defalcation, reviews of corporate records to determine the existence of management fraud, and review of corporate records as a part of whistleblower investigations. Investigations involve the documentation of work paper, complex analysis, and documentation in the form of formal reports to senior management.
Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Investigations and Reviews: Performed and managed numerous BSA reviews for foreign banks and broker-dealer firms. These engagements included “look back” audits and compliance reviews.
Background Investigations: Conducted multiple large scale background investigations of foreign individuals for state gaming agency licensure including the review of personal financial records culminating in the compilation of net worth and cash flow analysis.
Bryan Moser
Bryan Moser is a Director in the Advisory Services practice of Grant Thornton LLP located in McLean, Virginia.
Bryan has 16 years of experience assisting clients involved in investigations and litigation. His career began as an industry analyst for the Bureau of Labor Statistics and he spent nearly 15 years with PricewaterhouseCoopers. Bryan has assisted clients with government and internal fraud investigations. Example client issues include earnings management, billing fraud, employee embezzlement, improper vendor arrangements, tax evasion using offshore entities, and compliance with governmental policies. Bryan is often involved with helping clients through critical business situations in order to return focus to core operations as soon as possible and with suggesting operational improvements identified during the crisis situation. Bryan has analyzed business and financial aspects of complex litigation matters, assisting with damages analyses, calculation of lost profits and defense of class action. He has assisted clients in disputes involving breach of contract, product liability, intellectual property and other matters. He has assisted clients involved in purchase price disputes requiring analysis of complex accounting issues, on behalf buyers and sellers as well as in a neutral role. Across these experiences, he has applied extensive financial, accounting and economic analyses, including the development of complex financial and quantitative models and analysis of large volumes of documents and data.
